Abortion vote-counting on the Supreme Court

Scott Lemieux of Lawyers, Guns and Money posts an “analysis of the Supreme Court positions post-O’Connor”:http://lefarkins.blogspot.com/2005/07/abortion-post-oconnor-primer.html.

After the initial shock and dismay that came with the news, I have to remind myself that everything exists in context, and that we will adjust to whatever changes are made. Bush’s Supreme Court nominee will impact the 2006 elections.

I am personally nervous that the ensuing Supreme Court fight is going to do damage to women’s rights for at least the next 10 years, and damage to women’s rights hurts us all. But the pendulum will swing back, as it has time and time again throughout history. This statement isn’t intended to induce complacency, but instead should serve to remind us that panicking and/or restarting a long-kicked smoking habit isn’t the right response to the retirement of Hon. O’Connor.
