Bush: “The Devil made me do it”

Bush says he really “didn’t want to fly back to Washington, DC”:http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/3/27/183244/820 to sign the Schaivo bill.

Pathetic. While Republicans claim they don’t read the “tea-leaves”:http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/face_32705.pdf#page=3 (bottom of the page, statement by Mr. Perkins), as soon as the numbers start falling they start following the mob.

BTW, unlike Mr. Perkins, I do not think that “principled leadership” means appeasing the most extreme elements of your party, nor is it about doing what is popular or unpopular. It’s definitely not about saying one thing and doing another. It’s about wearing your principles on your sleeve and acting on them. It also requires the flexibility to decide what’s wrong and acting on it, even after you’ve started down a path.

I’ve not seen any principled leadership come out of Washington for a long, long time, unless the principles under consideration are a desire for power.
