Barak Obama: openness and politics

What I find most fascinating about the senate campaign of Barak Obama is the openness about his (former) pot and cocaine use, and how it influenced his election. His former opponents had been brought down by drug use and questionable sexual activities, but because Obama had spoken openly about them in his autobiography, he had insulated himself against similar attacks. Of course, the words “I guess I wasn’t a politician when I wrote them” has an undertone of remorse, but there’s a lesson here. People screw up, and it’s when you try to deny it that it brings you down. Apparently even in politics.
